During 2002 the Oceanário began the process of implementing a quality and environment management system. Once on its way, this process generated a momentum which no longer could be stopped. After all, Oceanário was (and is) an Institution firmly devoted to "promoting conservation of the environment, particularly that of the Oceans", and solely depending on the revenues generated by doing so. The implementation of such philosophy was, more than a necessity, a state of mind. The first steps of this process consisted on identifying and meeting every need generated by visitors, clients, suppliers, employees and the environment.

In 2003 the Oceanário became the first public aquarium in Europe ever to be awarded a NP EN ISO 9001:2000 and NP EN ISO 1400 and NP EN ISO 14001 certifications.

In 2005 the Oceanário's quality system was registered by EMAS (Eco-Management and Audit Scheme), which coincided with the publication of the first Environmental Declaration.

The implementation of this system has brought a wide range of improvements to the Oceanário's performance over the years. Over the near future, it is the Oceanário's wish to extend this philosophy to aspects such as Social Awareness.
