For long the Oceanário has adopted an Integrated System for Environment and Quality Management as one of the key features in its continuous development. This allowed the Oceanário to be the first Public Aquarium, in Europe, to be awarded ISO 9001, 14001 and EMAS (Eco-Management and Audit Scheme) certifications. The Oceanário was also the recipient of the EMAS 2005 Award.
