Name: Yellow banded pipefish
Scientific Name: Doryrhamphus pessuliferus (Fowler, 1938)
Family: Syngnathidae
Group: Bony fish
Class: Fish
Size: 11-25 cm.
Pipefish belong to the same family sea-dragons and sea-horses do (i.e. Syngnathidae). These animals share the characteristic of being ovoviviparous and incubating their eggs inside a pouch that lays under the caudal fin. This species in particular often exhibits cleaning behaviour. They are commonly seen along silted and muddy bottoms, which are common along areas with very little current, such as some estuaries.
