Name: Bluestripe pipefish
Scientific Name: Doryrhamphus excisus excisus Kaup, 1856
Family: Syngnathidae
Group: Bony fish
Class: Fish

Size: 11-25 cm.

Pipefish are closely related to sea-horses and sea-dragons and, like these, they are ovoviviparous and incubate their eggs inside a pouch they have under the caudal fin. This species is relatively rare and hides in rock holes, amidst the coral reef. They are often sighted in pairs. Their tiny tubular shaped mouth enables them to find on nothing else than small crustaceans and plankton.
