Name: Redfinger
Scientific Name: Cheilodactylus fasciatus (Lacepédè, 1803)
Family: Cheilodactylidae
Group: Bony fish
Class: Fish
Size: 26-50 cm.
The redfinger is quite common in rocky tidal pools, although it has been seen in depths up to 120 m. The adults have an unusual characteristic: the lower rays of the pectoral fin are narrow and elongated. These rays, in the posterior region, are free and function as appendages. They serve to maintain their balance when the fish is resting, and to detect food! The juveniles often seek shelter in floating objects.
