Name: Canary damsel
Scientific Name: Abudefduf luridus (Cuvier, 1830)
Family: Pomacentridae
Group: Bony fish
Class: Fish
Size: 11-25 cm.
The canary damsel is a sub-tropical species which, in Portugal, is found only in the warm waters of the Azores and Madeira. It is a territorial fish, which like other species of the same family deposits its eggs on rocks on the seabed to be guarded by the male. The male then tenaciously defends the eggs until they hatch. Afterwards, as they grow, juveniles seek shelter from predators in tidal pools. As this is a particularly hardy species, it is commonly found in aquariums.
