Name: Madeira rockfish
Scientific Name: Scorpaena maderensis (Valenciennes, 1833)
Family: Scorpaenidae
Group: Bony fish
Class: Fish
Size: 11-25 cm.
The Madeira rockfish is a fish of subtropical waters and hence, in Portugal, we find it only in the warm waters of the archipelagos of the Azores and Madeira. Like other rockfish, it is a solitary animal with sedentary habits. It lives in shallow waters next to the coast, where it remains immobile and disguised among rocks and algae. Although the Madeira rockfish has many spines, it is actually harmless.
