The ornate wrasse is a fish of brilliant colours, typical of tropical fishes. In fact, it is the only representative of Portuguese waters of the genus, Thalassoma, which is well distributed in tropical areas. It is a hermaphrodite species, in which the females change sex. These individuals, solitary and extremely territorial, dominate the others, including those who were originally born male. It swims actively in rocky areas and in seagrass meadows at depths up to 20 metres.
