The thick upper lip of the thick-lipped grey mullet distinguishes it from other mullets. This species lives in coastal waters, on muddy bottoms, and frequently enters estuaries and coastal lagoons. It occasionally migrates, travelling north in the summer, as the temperature increases. Its food is quite varied and includes a lot of detritus.
