Name: Corkwing wrasse, sea partridge, corkwing
Scientific Name: Symphodus melops (Linnaeus, 1758)
Family: Labridae
Group: Bony fish
Class: Fish
Size: 26-50 cm.
The corkwing wrasse is an hermaphrodite fish and sometimes the females can change into males. These are easily distinguished by their bright reddish colour, which contrasts with the brown or greenish colouring of females and juveniles. During the reproductive season, each male builds a nest with seagrass, to which it attempts to attract females. Adults and juveniles live together, in coastal waters close to rocks and seagrass.
