Scientific Name: Hemigymnus fasciatus (Bloch, 1792)
Family: Labridae
Group: Bony fish
Class: Fish

The barred thicklip is easily identified by its coloured head with thick lips and by the vertical black bars that cover the body of adults. The juveniles are green with yellow stripes and shelter in coral branches, while the adults prefer more exposed areas of the reef. They feed during the day on small invertebrates which they search for near the sea floor. At night they remain inactive among rocks and corals.
