The blackeye thicklip is easily identified by its thick lips and half black, half white body. The juveniles differ from the adults in having a yellow caudal fin and shelter among coral branches. The adults live in lagoons and coral reefs at depths up to 30 m, on sandy and coarse bottoms where they find the small invertebrates on which they feed.
