This sub-tropical species is abundant in shallow lagoons and in banks of sheltered reefs. They form large aggregations on branching corals of the genus Acropora and usually each juvenile stays close to individual coral heads. The male prepares the nest, which will be shared by several females. After spawning, it oxygenates the fertilised eggs, fanning its caudal fin in their direction. Finally it benefits from the unhatched eggs by eating them.
