The whitetail dascyllus forms large groups, which live on branching corals, in shallow sheltered bays. The males invite the females to release the eggs in their nests. After spawning the eggs are fertilised and carefully protected until the birth of the larvae. Throughout this entire period the males are extremely aggressive.
