Name: Comet
Scientific Name: Calloplesiops altivelis (Steindachner, 1903)
Family: Plesiopidae
Group: Bony fish
Class: Fish
Size: 11-25 cm.
The comet has a dark spot, similar to an eye, next to its caudal fin. Thus, when predators think they are attacking its head, the comet manages to escape in the opposite direction! When threatened, it inserts its head inside a hole and leaves its caudal fin outside. This has a shape and pigmentation similar to the head of the whitemouth moray, which frightens away other fish. It forages at night and spends the day in holes of coral reefs.
