The powder-blue surgeonfish lives in clear, shallow coastal waters between depths of 0.5 and 25 m. It is usually observed on coral reefs where it sometimes forms large shoals. As with other surgeonfishes, the blade present on both sides of the caudal fin can be used as a form of defence and is capable of causing deep wounds.
