This butterflyfish lives in rocky or coral reef areas at depths thought to be between 3 and 15 metres. Very often the male and female form pairs that stay together for many years and sometimes for their entire life! However, they can also form large aggregations. It is a very sensitive fish, which requires special care on the part of the aquarist.
