The checkerboard wrasse is an hermaphrodite fish, in which the females can change into males. When this occurs, the wrasse's colouring changes from yellowish grey to greenish blue, with the tips of the fins yellow. It lives in coral reefs, at depths up to 30 m where it feeds on small invertebrates.
