Size: 11-25 cm.
This wrasse keeps its pattern of six bands throughout its life, despite undergoing some alterations in colour depending on its age and sex. Like other wrasse, it is an hermaphrodite species and some females change into secondary males. These males are territorial and extremely colourful. They live in shallow lagoons and on the periphery of coral reefs.
