The barred sand bass swims on sandy bottoms next to rocks in shallow waters. It habitually forms small groups though, sometimes, solitary individuals are observed. During spawning, between April and October, these fish group together close to flat and sandy areas. This species is highly sought after by sports fishermen of California, though its commercial fishing is prohibited.
