Name: Tiger rockfish, blackbanded rockfish, banded rockfish
Scientific Name: Sebastes nigrocinctus (Ayres, 1859)
Family: Sebastidae
Group: Bony fish
Class: Fish
Size: 51-100 cm.
Tiger rockfish are immediately identifiable by the five vertical black or red stripes they have along their bodies. As juveniles, they form groups that swim freely in the water column. In adulthood, they become solitary and territorial animals, which live in holes and cracks in rocks, at depths up to 270 m. When disturbed, they rapidly change colour and move away from any intruders, except individuals of the species Sebastes ruberrimus, with which, interestingly, they share their shelter.
