Name: Black rockfish, black snapper, black bass
Scientific Name: Sebastes melanops (Girard, 1856)
Family: Sebastidae
Group: Bony fish
Class: Fish
Size: 51-100 cm.
As juveniles, the black rockfish shelter among kelp beds and tidal pools. As they grow, they move to deeper waters (up to 360 m), but always remain close to rocky reefs. Here, adults form shoals, with thousands of individuals, which swim in mid-water or next to the bottom, while they feed. They have venomous spines on their fins, which fishermen are careful to avoid while handling this important fish. The black rockfish has a truly impressive longevity, living for up to 36 years!
