Name: Copper rockfish, chucklehead, never die
Scientific Name: Sebastes caurinus (Richardson, 1844)
Family: Sebastidae
Group: Bony fish
Class: Fish
Size: 51-100 cm.
This rockfish can display colours as varied as red, cream, brown and pink. However, regardless of the colour of their body, all copper rockfish have several copper or red stripes on their back, and a white abdomen. They also have venomous spines on their fins, which can cause very distressing injuries. The copper rockfish lives next to the coast at depths up to 180 metres, but is more common in shallow and protected inlets. During the day, it remains immobile among rocks or kelp beds and becomes more active at night to feed. It is an extremely resistant fish, which is able to survive several hours out of the water.
