Name: Brown rockfish, bolina, rockfish
Scientific Name: Sebastes auriculatus (Girard, 1854)
Family: Sebastidae
Group: Bony fish
Class: Fish
Size: 51-100 cm.
The brown rockfish has venomous spines on its dorsal and pelvic fins, which can cause truly distressing injuries. It is distinguished from other rockfish by the dark blotch on its opercula. When young, it shelters in calm and protected waters of inlets. Later, as it grows, it moves progressively to deeper waters, sometimes up to 120 m. The brown rockfish feeds principally at night and during the day rests on the sea floor, among algae and rocks, or next to other objects (pipes, tires, etc.).
