Blue hottentot adults can be found next to rocky reefs, at depths up to about 80 m. Here, they feed on worms, crustaceans, molluscs and algae, which they scrape from the rocks with their strong incisors. The juveniles prefer protected and shallower waters, safe from predators. They start breeding when they have grown to 25 cm in length, and reproduction takes place during the summer months.
