Name: Musselcracker seabream, white musselcracker
Scientific Name: Sparodon durbanensis (Castelnau, 1861)
Family: Sparidae
Group: Bony fish
Class: Fish
Size: 101-200 cm.
As juveniles, musselcracker seabream live protected in tidal pools and feed on algae. Later, as they grow, their jaws become progressively stronger and develop powerful molars, capable of breaking the shells of molluscs and crustaceans. As this takes place, they begin to feed on these animals. Adults are easily identified by their large robust head. They also swim in more exposed areas, next to rocks at depths up to 80 m.
