The salema is a shoaling fish that swims next to the coast in areas that are rich in marine plants, on which it feeds. Although adult salemas are herbivorous, juveniles prefer to feed on crustaceans or even other smaller juvenile fish. This is an hermaphrodite species, in which the males turn into females.
