Name: European seabass, seabass, common seabass
Scientific Name: Dicentrarchus labrax (Linnaeus, 1758)
Family: Moronidae
Group: Bony fish
Class: Fish
Size: 51-100 cm.
While they are young, the European seabass form shoals to protect themselves from predators and are commonly found swimming among other species. The adults are solitary animals but on some occasions do come together to attack shoals of other fishes. They are voracious predators, patrolling all kinds of coastal bottoms in search of food and, given that they can withstand low salinity, will penetrate estuaries and rivers. They boast an impressive longevity of up to 30 years!
