Name: Pollak, European pollak, lythe
Scientific Name: Pollachius pollachius (Linnaeus, 1758)
Family: Gadidae
Group: Bony fish
Class: Fish
Size: 51-100 cm.
The pollak inhabits rocky zones or hard substrates on the north coasts of Europe and the Mediterranean at depths up to 200 m. Between the months of January and May, it forms large shoals that come together to reproduce. This fish, of the cod and haddock families, can reach 130 cm in length and 12 kg in weight, which makes it popular among sporting fishermen. Unlike other species of the same family, the pollak does not have barbels on the lower jaw.
