The black seabream is a hermaphrodite species in which the females can change into males. The females deposit eggs on the sea floor and take on the role of protecting the eggs and keeping them oxygenated until they hatch. The juveniles are solitary and shelter in estuaries, among seagrass meadows. The adults, solitary or in shoals, swim in more exposed waters, but always in the vicinity of rocks or seagrass meadows, at depths up to 50 m.
