Name: Wreckfish
Scientific Name: Polyprion americanus (Bloch & Schneider, 1801)
Family: Polyprionidae
Group: Bony fish
Class: Fish
Size: 101-200 cm.
Despite its striking similarity to groupers, wreckfish have some unique features that have placed them in a family of their own. One of such features is a slight depression on top of the head, above the eyes. Juvenile individuals live under floating objects, while adults may often be observed, usually alone, in larger caves or shipwrecks, hence their name.
