Name: Yellow tang
Scientific Name: Zebrasoma flavescens (Bennett, 1828)
Family: Acanthuridae
Group: Bony fish
Class: Fish
Size: 0-10 cm.
Like all other surgeonfish, yellow tangs have two very sharp blades on each side of the caudal peduncle, which come into play every time these animals need to defend themselves from whatever threats they may encounter. This particular species features white blades. They live alone or in small numbers, typically in reef areas with vigorous wave action. They feed on small and filamentous algae and will spawn in pairs or small groups, where territorial males exhibit courtship behaviour towards females.
