As juveniles, permits form large shoals that swim in the splash zone, far from predators. As they grow and reach adulthood, they move to reefs and channels, where they occur in small groups or even alone. Here, they feed next to the bottom on invertebrates and small fish. They are naturally curious animals and hence, easy to observe in their natural environment, where it is common to find them next to holes.
