Name: Sharpsnouted seabream, puntazzo
Scientific Name: Diplodus puntazzo (Cetti, 1777)
Family: Sparidae
Group: Bony fish
Class: Fish
Size: 26-50 cm.
Just as its name suggests, the sharpsnouted seabream is distinguished by its unusually elongated head, which terminates in a small mouth. This coastal species appears in rocky substrates or seagrass meadows, next to the splash zone, where it finds food - algae, sponges and anemones. The juveniles form shoals and prefer to swim far from predators in protected areas like lagoons and pools, sometimes of brackish water. The adults, in contrast, are solitary animals.
