The pinnate spadefish has a laterally compressed body and is more silvery than other members of this family. Unlike others, the adults have a slightly concave profile. They generally live alone and are observed under ledges, on the periphery of reefs. The juveniles swim among the roots of mangroves and in sheltered areas of reefs, where they can find hiding places. They feed on zooplankton, particularly jellyfish.
