Name: Green moray, green conger, green congo
Scientific Name: Gymnothorax funebris (Ranzani, 1840)
Family: Muraenidae
Group: Bony fish
Class: Fish
Size: 201-400 cm.
Green morays live in tidal pools, mangroves and coral or rocky reefs at depths up to 30 m. These animals should be approached with caution as adults can attack even when they are not provoked. Due to their considerable size (up to 2.5 m and 30 kg), they can inflict serious injuries. Throughout its life, the green moray's colouring changes and goes from black in juveniles to dark green in adults. The flesh of the larger individuals can be toxic and cause ciguatera due to the accumulation of toxins from their prey.
