Name: Malabar grouper
Scientific Name: Epinephelus malabaricus (Block & Schneider, 1801)
Family: Serranidae
Group: Bony fish
Class: Fish
Size: 101-200 cm.
As juveniles, Malabar groupers shelter in mangroves, estuaries and tidal pools. As they grow, they move into more exposed areas of coral or rocky reefs, up to 150 m deep. Here, they shelter in caves or holes, but they appear to be very curious animals, which leads them to spontaneously approach divers. Although Malabar groupers can grow to a considerable size (measuring as long as 2 m and weighing up to 100 kg), they are a harmless species, unlike other groupers.
