Name: Blacksaddled coralgrouper
Scientific Name: Plectropomus laevis (Lacepède, 1801)
Family: Serranidae
Group: Bony fish
Class: Fish
Size: 51-100 cm.
The blacksaddled coralgrouper is a voracious fish that even eats other groupers! Its diet is responsible for large concentrations of toxins that cause ciguatera. It lives in lagoons and next to the periphery of coral reefs. The juveniles swim next to the sea floor and, to protect themselves, mimic the black-saddled toby (a puffer fish, Canthigaster valentini) because it is toxic.
