Name: Blue-and-yellow grouper
Scientific Name: Epinephelus flavocaeruleus (Lacepède, 1802)
Family: Serranidae
Group: Bony fish
Class: Fish
Size: 51-100 cm.
This fish undergoes great changes throughout its growth. While the young ones are blue and yellow and prefer shallow waters, the adults are black and inhabit the deepest areas of the reef. But these do not cover all the changes, since they have a very important survival characteristic, which is common to every species in this family. They are capable of changing sex! In this particular case, it is the female that, if there is a shortage of males, can become a dominant male - they are protogenic hermaphrodites. They feed on a large variety of fish, but also on crustaceans and cephalopods. They are very sociable.
