Name: Gilthead seabream, gilthead, gilthead bream
Scientific Name: Sparus aurata (Linnaeus, 1758)
Family: Sparidae
Group: Bony fish
Class: Fish
Size: 51-100 cm.
The gilthead seabream owes its name to the golden coloured band on its head, between its eyes. It is a fish that does not travel far from the shoreline and rarely descends beyond 30 m. Here, among the rocks and seagrass meadows, it finds its preferred food - mussels. The gilthead seabream is an hermaphrodite species in which males can change into females. In this way, it is able to balance the number of individuals of each sex, thus contributing to the reproductive success of the species. A gilthead seabream can grow to 70 cm and weigh 17 kg.
