Name: Atlantic herring
Scientific Name: Clupea harengus (Linnaeus, 1758)
Family: Clupeidae
Group: Bony fish
Class: Fish

Size: 26-50 cm.

The Atlantic herring lives in the cold and nutrient-rich waters of the continental shelf in the North Atlantic Ocean, where large silvery shoals move across the coastal waters. Its extensive hearing capacity and rapid escape response mean it can easily escape predators. It is a fish of high commercial value throughout the world, contributing an enormous tonnage towards fishing. Consequently it is important that the various countries involved carefully consider the number and size of Atlantic herring that can be caught, in order to protect its populations from diminishing.
