Name: Mediterranean rainbow wrasse
Scientific Name: Coris julis (Linnaeus, 1758)
Family: Labridae
Group: Bony fish
Class: Fish
Size: 26-50 cm.
The Mediterranean rainbow wrasse lives near the coast on rocky shores and next to marine plant beds. Like other fish from its family, it is hermaphrodite with the oldest females changing sex and becoming secondary males. Hence, individuals of the same species can display patterns of various colours. The juveniles behave like cleaner wrasse, which gives them greater chance of survival while they are small. The adult fish will bury themselves in the sand when they feel threatened.
