The southern fiddler is easily identifiable by the triangular pattern behind its eyes. It is very common near the coast, in areas protected by rock reefs with sandy bottoms and marine grass prairies. It may sometimes be found in estuarine areas. It is ovoviviparous and the capsule around the embryos (a maximum of 3) is golden. It feeds on benthic invertebrates.
