Name: Puffadder shyshark, dogfish
Scientific Name: Haploblepharus edwardsii (Voigt, 1832)
Family: Scyliorhinidae
Group: Sharks, rays and chimaeras
Class: Fish
Size: 51-100 cm.
This small coastal shark is only found in the sub-tropical waters of South Africa. During the day it forms large groups, which rest on the sea floor and only disperse at night to feed. The females choose sheltered areas far from predators to lay their eggs, of which there are only two. These are protected inside strong capsules, which attach to rocks, algae and other surfaces. After some months, the small juveniles are born measuring about 10 cm and already resembling adults.
