Name: Giant shovelnose ray, common shovelnose ray, brown shovelnose ray
Scientific Name: Rhinobatos typus (Bennet, 1830)
Family: Rhinobatidae
Group: Sharks, rays and chimaeras
Class: Fish
Size: 201-400 cm.
The giant shovelnose ray lives in coastal tropical waters. While the adult rays live at depths up to 100 m, juveniles prefer more sheltered areas, such as mangroves, atolls and estuaries, where it is easy to find them feeding during the flooding tide. This species of ray tolerates wide variations in water salinity and, in fact, there are some examples of individuals living permanently in fresh water.
