Name: Pink whipray
Scientific Name: Himantura fai (Jordan Seale, 1906)
Family: Dasyatidae
Group: Sharks, rays and chimaeras
Class: Fish
Size: 101-200 cm.
The pink whipray is a ray found in shallow tropical waters, next to coral reefs. Here it forms large groups that live on the bottom, concealed by the sand. It has a large venomous spine at the base of its tail, which is capable of inflicting deep wounds. It is extremely sharp and can measure up to 16 cm in larger specimens. These wounds can also be extremely dangerous, due to the venom injected into the victim. However, the pain can be alleviated by immersing the affected area in water as hot as possible, thus neutralising the venom.
