Name: Cownose ray
Scientific Name: Rhinoptera bonasus (Mitchill, 1815)
Family: Myliobatidae
Group: Sharks, rays and chimaeras
Class: Fish
Size: 101-200 cm.
This ray has a body that is wider than it is long, resembling the shape of a diamond. This means that its fins are large, ideal for swimming in the water column. The gracious movement of these fins is reminiscent of a bird flying. In the summer, the cownose ray forms small groups, segregated by sex, that is, with only males or only females. These groups swim together to the coasts of the southern United States. From autumn, they are seen in large shoals (sometimes with more than 10,000 individuals), which migrate to waters in the south, as far as Brazil, where they spend the winter.
