Name: Moon coral
Scientific Name: Favites sp. Link, 1807
Family: Hippolytidae
Group: Anemones, corals and jellyfish
Class: Invertebrates
Size: 51-100 cm.
These corals will form colonies on the flat and more turbid areas of the reef. Some say these resemble the moon (with craters and everything!) while others say it strongly resembles a pineapple. But these similarities are only apparent in daylight. This is the time when the polyps are retracted and the hive shaped coral is easily observed.
