Name: Bubble coral
Scientific Name: Plerogyra sinuosa Edwards & Haime, 1848
Family: Euphyliidae
Group: Anemones, corals and jellyfish
Class: Invertebrates
Size: 26-50 cm.
All corals from this group have a remarkable ability to inflate their modified tentacles, making them look like small bladders. The function of these bladders, which are shaped like tiny grapes in this species, is to protect the underlying polyps. These are only visible at night, when they project outwards in search of food. This species, although very fragile looking, will painfully sting the unaware diver with its poisonous cells.
