Name: Red sea-cucumber
Scientific Name: Holothuria edulis Lesson, 1830
Family: Holothuridae
Group: Sea-stars, sea-urchins and sea-cucumbers
Class: Invertebrates
Size: 26-50 cm.
Sea-cucumbers or holothurians are echinoderms, which means they are close relatives of sea-stars and sea-urchins. They are common in the shallow areas of the reef, especially in sandy bottoms. They feed on nutrients and small living critters that dwell in the sediment, which they revolve and stir as they move along. This activity leaves quite an obvious and easily identifiable track where these animals go through.
